King Mackerel vs Spanish Mackerel – What are some differences?
King mackerel, also called kingfish, are very similar in color and markings to the Spanish mackerel. Both Spanish and young Kings have yellow spots, while the king is silver in color the Spanish flashes more color. However, King gets its name from being much larger in size. The smaller Spanish mackerel is very similar to a small King but if you lift the dorsal fin, you’ll find black color rather than opaque. Off the Alabama coastline you can find King mackerel weighing in at 60 pounds. However, most frequently the King ranges in size from 20 – 35 pounds. Average size of Spanish mackerel is 2-3 pounds.
