Groupers are big, bottom dwellers and the most iconic fish species in the world. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced angler, the best grouper fishing guide will ensure you have a successful catch at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in Alabama. Here is what you should know before you embark on your fishing expedition:
How to fish for grouper
Groupers are sporty to catch. Because of their large mouths, they can catch long baits. If you feel like your fish line has tangled something, you should avoid pulling for a moment. Instead, take your time to tire the grouper since it won’t stop pulling until it feels secure.
If you want to increase your odds of success when fishing a grouper, you should focus on bottom fishing. Usually you’ll find the big catches at least 400 feet. These species rarely go to the surface, so you should fish the grouper with an electric reel. For a successful catch, you want bait like:
- octopus
- sardine
- mackerel
- squid
- white crab
Types of grouper
Gag Grouper
The gag grouper lives in drop-offs, reefs, and other rocky structures of the water. However, younger gags like to stay in seagrass beds and estuaries. An adult grouper weighs 50 pounds.
Black Grouper
It’s one of the largest species in the gulf that is loved by recreational and commercial anglers. An adult weighs 100 pounds and can grow over 4 feet. You’ll find the black grouper in reefs and rocky bottoms (60-250 feet of water). During summer, you can spot the fish in shallower water (30 feet deep).
Goliath grouper
These heavyweights can reach up to 800 pounds. While you expect to catch big fish in rocky coastal waters, the goliath grouper hangs around estuaries. In the late 20th century, the goliath was overfished almost to extension- it’s strictly protected these days. Of course, their fearless curiosity and big size make them an easy target for anglers.
Nassau Grouper
Ask any experienced angler, and they will tell you that Nassau is the most intelligent fish in the sea. An adult grouper can reach 38 pounds and grow over 8 feet.
Scamp grouper
Scamp is arguably the tastiest fish in the grouper family. An average fish weighs 5 pounds and can reach 2 feet. Because these are deep water species, you’ll find a scamp past 100 feet of water.
Red grouper
The red grouper thrives in deep water. It tastes better, and that’s why most people go offshore. An adult red grouper weighs somewhere between 8-10 pounds and can grow over two feet. It’s extremely rare to catch as it can live about 1000 feet down the sea.
Other types of groupers include:
- Warsaw grouper
- Speckled Hind
- Snowy grouper
Even the smallest groupers will give you hard fights. But you never know what you’ll come across in your next adventure.
